Nature of Work
Performs difficult skilled mechanical work on specialized construction and automotive equipment. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate mechanics and helpers providing assistance and training.
Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties
Instructs and participates in the work of subordinate mechanics and service workers
Performs major and minor motor repair and replacement work, cleaning and replacing spark plugs and installing radiator hoses
Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a wide variety of medium and heavy gasoline and diesel driven bulldozers, graders, front-end loaders, air compressors, pump apparatus and truck hydraulic systems
Repairs, overhauls and maintains specialized equipment
Interprets electrical and hydraulic schematics for proper repair of vehicles
Overhauls, fabricates and services assemblies and accessories such as single and two speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, hydraulic compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components
Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices such as dynamometers, boring bars, valve refacing and reseating equipment, micrometers, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, clutch cover assembly devices, power SlWS, grinders, drill presses and lathes
Requisitions parts and materials used in the repair of equipment
Refaces valves and seats, including grinding, assembling and adjustment
Installs rings and bearings and effects proper adjustments
Overhauls and repairs carburetors and clutches
Performs selected repairs and replacement on diesel driven equipment
Repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition and fuel systems; transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies
Performs diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights and repairing generators and starters
Performs related work as required

Minimum Requirements
Four (4) years full-time experience in major mechanical repairs to automobile or heavy duty automotive equipment in a fleet environment Three (3) ASE certifications OR certifications in automotive mechanics from accredited schools may substitute for up to one (1) year experience (1200 classroom hours = one year of experience)
