Call Detail Records (CDRs):

 

Call details records are critical metadata that show how and when your company's phone system was used.

Call details records (CDRs) are information about calls made using a telephone service. CDR reports provide detailed information to businesses about calls made through a phone service.

What's a Call Detail Record?

CDR stands for metadata. It is data about data. It contains information about how a specific phone number or user uses the telephone system.

  • Date and time at which the call was made
  • Duration of the ring (in minutes).
  • Who called whom? (source number and destination number)
  • What type of call was made? Inbound or outbound, toll-free?
  • What is the cost of making a call based on a per-minute rate?

CDRs can also contain SMS metadata. Call detail records only show the number of calls received and basic call properties.

CDR stands for


A call data record (CDR) is a collection of information that pertains to mobile phone calls made by a user during a specified period. The CDR doesn't include content from a telephone conversation or messages exchanged.

The CDR string includes details such as name and details, subscribers, details about calls during a period and duration, call recipients, call termination types, abnormalities, and location.

Telecom operators can access the CDR. This record includes sensitive information such as Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Numbers (MSISDNs), International Mobile Subscriber Identity[IMSI], International Mobile Equipment Identity[IMEI]) and location details of mobile subscribers.

Police can obtain CDRs.


CDRs must be provided to law enforcement agents and courts upon their request or direction by the law in force in our country.

Rules for calling records were tightened after a 2013 dispute over key politicians' unauthorised access to CDRs.

According to the new guidelines, only officers in the Superintendent of Police (SP) are permitted to request information from telecom operators. DM should also notify the Chief Secretary of State about details regarding the collection.



Operators must keep CDRs for one year.


The License Agreement for Unified License includes Licensing Condition No.39.20. This requires Indian telecom operators to keep customer records, including CDRs, for at least one year to permit the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to inspect them for security reasons.

The licensing condition, which was mentioned previously, states:

39.20 Licensee must maintain all commercial records/Call Detail Record(CDR), Exchange Detail Record (EDR) and IP Detail Record[IPDR] that pertain to communications over the network. The Licensor may inspect these records for at least one year of security purposes. If the Licensor directs otherwise, they may be destroyed. In addition, from Time to Time, the Licensor may issue instructions/directions concerning CDR/IPDR/EDR.

The DoT may issue instructions and directives from Time to Time about preserved records as per the licensing conditions.


The DoT is the licenser in this case. Mobile companies must provide CDRs to the courts and law enforcement agencies upon their request. There is a protocol.

 


 

What purpose can the CDR serve?

CDR information can serve many purposes. Law enforcement agencies can use it for evidence in court, tracing missing persons, retrieving stolen or damaged mobile phones, and other purposes.

Parties in a criminal case might be able to summon such records to serve as defence evidence or to cross-examine witnesses with assistance from the court.

A typical coverage area of a mobile tower in the US is 500m. Therefore, service providers will usually mention the location within 500m of where the call was made. Police use this information to assist with their investigations.

Enforcement agencies have been able, over time, to prove many cases by obtaining information about CDR through investigative methods.

 

 

Why is it taking so long to get CDRs?

 

Only telecom firms can get the CDRs. After that, the court or police can request the details.

The telecom companies will only have access to the CDRs for the past year.

Personal reasons cannot be obtained.

Individuals can't obtain CDRs unless the matter is before court. CDRs are necessary to prove one's case.

CDR information can't be legally obtained by anyone to spy upon their spouses or children. Any officer with the rank of Police Superintendent can be approached.
